Theater Camp Review |
July 22nd
Yesterday was the first time I went to the theater camp for a whole day. I remember the beginning of the camp started with Mr. Bong for acting. He instructed the four knights from every team how the most important point that we all should improve on is our breathing. Not only does it mean the way we breathe in and out, but it really talks about how we deliver each line with the right emotions fit for the situation our character is in. In our first class, we also focused on our hand and body movements - including the way we stand. Sometimes, Mr. Bong would correct us saying that we couldn't be seen, should add more emotion in dialogue, etc.
Another class I had that day was for singing. Here again I was with all the other Quince, Bottom, Snug, and Flute. We worked on songs 1, 7, 10, and 13. I struggled a bit with reaching the higher notes in songs 7 and 10, but the teacher reassured me, saying that I could sing in my normal voice if I wanted to.
Later when I was with the head teachers, I watched J team and learned where to stand in the first two scenes I come out in. By observing the way other Quinces expressed their lines, I was able to learn from them and thought about the different details I could add to make myself be more of an interesting character that could help make the scene more fun for the audience.

Today I learned a lot more about how to become more like the character Quince is supposed to be and got a step closer to clearly knowing about what my movements are in dancing. The dancing class helped refresh a lot of my memory in where my spot is in the song.
Secondly, I found out my blocking in scene 11. In the time I have left for my next practice, I should work on having more emotions in this scene. Though of course I definitely need to practice all my other scenes, too!
Thirdly, in my class with Mr. Brad, I got more of an idea on how to use different expressions in scene 5 and 8. For example, in my line, "No, Bottom, you're Pyramus," I should first act very exasperated from the way Nick Bottom is always asking me if he could do this role and that when he already has his character, Pyramus. Continuing, in the next part, "the handsome and strong gentleman. You're the only one who can play that role," I should sound convincing, but also seem to be begging for him to stop. I think this scene is one that should make the audience laugh. Hopefully, I will be able to make that happen during my real performance. To do so, I need more practice.
In the end, I felt exhausted. It was a hot day to begin with, and I did lots of moving. What matters most is all of the helpful advice I received which I will definitely take into consideration. I do think that I have somewhat grown in the past two days than I could probably not have done by myself. I also sensed that I got closer to some members of my team because of the camp. Cannot believe my performance is so soon! Makes me wonder how many times I have said this, haha. Team D, fighting!!!
